What If Han Li Had Made Different Choices
On the path of cultivation, every step is a tribulation, every thought a lifetime. Han Li (韩立) went from a poor mountain village boy to the pinnacle of the Immortal Realm, passing through countless moments of decision along the way. Each choice was a fork in the road, leading to a radically different destiny. This article conducts a series of "thought experiments," exploring the "what ifs" at those critical junctures.
What If Han Li Had Never Found the Heavenly Bottle
This is the most fundamental hypothetical, because the Heavenly Bottle (掌天瓶) can be called the very cornerstone of Han Li's entire cultivation career.
Most likely outcome: Stalling at Foundation Establishment or Core Formation, dying of old age.
Han Li's spirit root aptitude ranks as below-average in the cultivation world -- his Wood-attribute spirit root is not terrible, but hardly exceptional. Without the Heavenly Bottle's ability to accelerate spirit herb maturation, his cultivation speed would plummet. Given the limited resources available through the Seven Mysteries Sect (七玄门), reaching Foundation Establishment would already be difficult; Core Formation would require extraordinary luck. Nascent Soul would be a virtually impossible goal.
In the cultivation system of this world, these stages represent major milestones: Foundation Establishment (筑基) is akin to becoming a proper cultivator, Core Formation (金丹) signifies a mid-tier power, and Nascent Soul (元婴) marks entry into the upper echelons. Each breakthrough dramatically extends one's lifespan and power.
However, what truly makes Han Li formidable has never been the Heavenly Bottle alone. His caution, composure, decisive judgment in critical moments, and boldness when it counts -- these are personal qualities independent of the bottle. Even without it, he would likely have become a standout among low-level cultivators -- perhaps an elder of some small sect, or a successful independent cultivator living out his years peacefully in a corner of the Heavenly South region.
This hypothesis reveals an interesting paradox: a Han Li without the bottle might have lived a more peaceful and safer life, but would absolutely never have become the legend who strode across multiple realms. The Heavenly Bottle was both his greatest fortune and the root cause of a lifetime of displacement and danger.
What If Han Li Had Joined a Different Sect
In the Heavenly South cultivation world, each major sect has its own distinctive character. If Han Li had been taken in by a different sect, how would his trajectory have changed?
Joining the Masked Moon Sect (掩月宗) -- A Demonic Dao Sect
The Masked Moon Sect practices demonic cultivation arts, whose aggressive style clashes sharply with Han Li's cautious nature. "Demonic" cultivation in this context does not mean evil per se -- it refers to unorthodox methods that often achieve faster results but carry greater risks of mental corruption or physical backlash. If Han Li had joined the Masked Moon Sect, he would have faced two possible outcomes: either being consumed by the demonic arts' backlash, or mastering them through sheer willpower to carve out an entirely different path.
Interestingly, Han Li does end up cultivating several unorthodox methods later in the story, suggesting his mental fortitude and comprehension were sufficient to handle various cultivation paths. But at an early stage, lacking strong mental foundations, rashly dabbling in demonic arts would have been extremely dangerous. Overall assessment: more danger than opportunity -- roughly 70% risk, 30% chance.
Joining Spirit Beast Mountain (灵兽山)
Spirit Beast Mountain is renowned for its beast-taming arts. Han Li later demonstrates exceptional skill with spirit insects and spirit beasts (such as the Six-Winged Frost Centipedes and the Gold Devouring Beetles), suggesting real talent in this area. If he had systematically studied beast-taming from the beginning, he might have walked the path of a "Beast King" -- compensating for personal cultivation shortcomings with a spirit beast army.
Overall assessment: Moderate feasibility. Spirit Beast Mountain allocates more resources toward spirit beasts, which might actually constrain the cultivator's own development. Han Li might have become an outstanding beast tamer, but would have struggled to reach the heights he attains in the main story.
What If Han Li Had Skipped the Scattered Star Seas Adventure
The Scattered Star Seas (乱星海) represent a major turning point in Han Li's cultivation career. He gained numerous opportunities there while also facing extreme danger. The Scattered Star Seas is a lawless archipelago region where cultivators compete for resources with minimal oversight -- a perilous but rewarding frontier. What if he had chosen to stay in the Heavenly South and cultivate steadily instead of venturing out?
Most likely outcome: Steady but slow cultivation growth, becoming a regional power in the Heavenly South, but with a limited horizon.
The Scattered Star Seas expedition brought Han Li precious spirit materials and cultivation resources, and more importantly, vastly broadened his worldview. Without this experience, his combat experience and adaptability would have been significantly diminished. Though the Heavenly South also has competition and conflict, the intensity pales in comparison to the Scattered Star Seas. A Han Li raised in a "greenhouse" would likely have struggled against the even more perilous challenges that lay ahead.
From another angle, the Scattered Star Seas expedition also nearly killed Han Li on several occasions. Had he stayed in the Heavenly South, his achievements would have been limited but his safety significantly increased. This is the fundamental contradiction of the cultivation path: comfort means mediocrity; only risk leads to transcendence.
What If Han Li Had Chosen a Different Faction in the Great Jin Empire
The Great Jin (大晋) cultivation world's landscape is far more complex than the Heavenly South, with various powers intertwined and vying for influence. Han Li's faction choices in Great Jin profoundly shaped his development. What if he had aligned differently?
Going All-In with a Major Sect
If Han Li had abandoned his independent cultivator identity and pledged full allegiance to a major sect (such as the Myriad Poison Sect or a core sect of the Heavenly Dao Alliance), he could have gained a more stable resource supply and a stronger backer. But the cost would be loss of freedom -- a major sect's rules and missions would constrain his movements, and Han Li's greatest advantage is precisely the flexibility of acting independently.
Overall assessment: High short-term gains, potentially a hindrance long-term. Han Li's success largely stems from his "lone wolf" style of operation. Entering an institutional framework too early might have stifled his potential.
What If Han Li Had Stayed in the Mortal World
This is the most extreme hypothesis: what if Han Li had rejected the temptation of cultivation and chosen to live an ordinary life in the mortal world?
Given Han Li's intelligence and diligence, he would very likely have become successful in the mortal world -- perhaps a physician (he did learn considerable medical knowledge from Doctor Mo), perhaps a merchant, or perhaps he would have found some success on the path of the imperial examinations (though the novel does not explicitly mention his educational level, his learning ability suggests it was not impossible).
He would have married, raised children, and lived out his life in some small town. Seven or eight decades later, his name would be carved on a gravestone, occasionally mentioned by descendants. No earth-shaking battles, no thousands of years of solitary cultivation, no soaring through the stars -- just an ordinary person's ordinary life.
What makes this hypothesis most poignant is that this is precisely the real life of the vast majority of people. Han Li is special not because he was born with extraordinary talent, but because at fate's crossroads he chose the more dangerous, lonelier, and infinitely vaster road.
The Nature of Choice
Looking back at these hypotheticals, a consistent theme emerges: every one of Han Li's critical choices was essentially a decision between "safety" and "risk." And every time, he chose the latter -- not out of recklessness, but from the clear-eyed recognition that the path of cultivation offers no retreat.
Through Han Li's story, Wang Yu (忘语) tells readers: fate is not a straight line, but a path built from countless choices. Every "what if" leads to a completely different life. And the Han Li we witness -- the one who walked from mortality to the Immortal Realm -- is the most improbable and most admirable of all possible versions.
He chose the hardest road, then walked it step by step to the very end. That is the entire meaning of a mortal's journey to immortality.
