The Demonic Tribulation (魔劫) was a catastrophe the likes of which the Spirit Realm (灵界) had not seen in ten thousand years. Its root cause lay in the periodic weakening of the boundary between the Spirit Realm and the Devil Realm (魔界) -- every tens of thousands of years, the barrier between the two realms thins to its weakest point, and the Devil Tribe (魔族) seizes this celestial window to launch a massive invasion of the Spirit Realm, seeking to devour its resources and expand their territory. This particular Demonic Tribulation was especially fierce because the three great Progenitors of the Devil Realm had jointly orchestrated it, plotting for ages, and the Spirit Realm's estimate of when the tribulation would arrive was fatally inaccurate.
Cultural Context: The concept of "tribulations" (劫) in Daoist cosmology refers to cyclical catastrophes that test and transform all beings.
