Spells vs. Cultivation Arts: Two Different Dimensions

In the cultivation system, cultivation arts (功法, gongfa) and spells (术法, shufa) are two entirely distinct concepts. Cultivation arts are the path of internal cultivation, determining the quality and total quantity of spiritual power; spells are the techniques of external application, determining how spiritual power is channeled and combat efficiency. A cultivator may practice only one cultivation art, but must master multiple spells -- otherwise they would have a body full of spiritual power with no way to effectively use it.

Wang Yu (忘语) presented a world of extraordinary spell diversity in A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality. From low-level basic spells to high-level heavenly divine abilities, the layered richness of the spell system provides each battle with its own unique tactical landscape.

Offensive Spells

Basic Offensive Spells

The first type of spells that low-level cultivators encounter. Fireball Spell, Ice Spike Spell, Wind Blade Spell -- these are the most common entry-level offensive spells. They cost little spiritual power and are quick to cast, but their power is limited, effective only in Qi Refining (炼气) stage combat.

It is worth noting that even the most basic spells can produce vastly different effects in different cultivators' hands. Spiritual power quality, spiritual sense strength, and adaptability in the moment all influence the final performance of the same spell.

Mid-Level Offensive Spells

The primary battle spells of Foundation Establishment (筑基) to Core Formation (结丹) stage cultivators. These include various advanced elemental spells, flying sword techniques, and talisman attacks. At this stage, spells begin to show clear school differentiation -- sword cultivators, talisman cultivators, and artifact cultivators each have their preferred methods of attack.

The Purple Flame Art (紫焰术) that Han Li (韩立) extensively used during his Foundation Establishment and Core Formation periods is a classic mid-level offensive spell. Its characteristics include extremely high temperature and strong penetrating power, offering solid counters against most defensive spells.

High-Level Offensive Spells

Powerful spells that only Nascent Soul (元婴) stage and above cultivators can cast. These spells are characterized by enormous spiritual power consumption and long preparation times, but devastating destructive force. Many high-level spells require special channeling processes and may not find an opportunity for use during intense combat.

Large-area offensive spells begin to appear at this stage. Battles between Nascent Soul cultivators often affect an area spanning dozens of miles, precisely because their offensive spells have transcended "point-to-point" precision strikes and entered the realm of "area coverage."

Heavenly Divine Abilities

The ultimate offensive means exclusive to Deity Transformation (化神) stage and above cultivators. Heavenly divine abilities are not simple outputs of spiritual power, but rather dimensional strikes that borrow the power of heaven and earth. The forces a Deity Transformation cultivator can mobilize have surpassed the scope of personal spiritual power -- in a sense, they are "borrowing" the world's power.

Defensive Spells

Protective Spells

The most fundamental and most important defensive measure. From Qi Refining stage spiritual light body protection to Nascent Soul stage golden light barriers, each realm has its corresponding protective spells. A cultivator can get by without flashy offensive techniques, but must never lack reliable body protection.

Han Li's combat style perfectly demonstrates the importance of defense -- he would activate multiple layers of defense at the very first moment of almost every battle, preferring to waste spiritual power rather than risk being caught by a surprise attack. This "defensive counterattack" strategy is especially effective in the cultivation world, since many lethal attacks strike their targets during moments of carelessness.

Escape Arts

Strictly speaking, escape arts (遁术, dunshu) belong to the support category, but in actual combat their defensive value often surpasses any shield. If you can outrun the enemy, you won't die -- this is the simplest yet most effective survival rule in the cultivation world.

Escape arts come in rich variety: Earth Escape, Water Escape, Blood Escape, Lightning Escape, each with its own characteristics. Blood Escape (血遁) is the last-resort life-saving measure -- it burns essence blood in exchange for brief extreme speed, but inevitably causes severe cultivation damage afterward. Han Li survived numerous crises through various escape arts.

It is worth mentioning that escape art speed is directly tied to cultivation level. When a high-level cultivator pursues a low-level one, the lower cultivator has virtually no chance of escaping through escape arts alone -- this is the technical basis for the cultivation world's "big fish eat small fish" rule.

Formation Defense

Defensive systems formed through formation arrays (阵法, zhenfa). The advantage of formation defense lies in its ability to stack layers and leverage terrain, making it extremely valuable in siege warfare. But its disadvantage is equally obvious: it requires advance setup and cannot be used in surprise encounters. See the dedicated formation arrays article for details.

Support Spells

Detection Spells

Spiritual sense probing is the most basic detection method, but the cultivation world has numerous specialized detection spells. Some can detect specific types of spiritual energy fluctuations, others can track specific targets, and still others can see through concealment and illusions.

Han Li's attainments in this area were quite profound. His spiritual sense was already stronger than same-level cultivators, and combined with specialized detection spells, he often held a significant advantage in information gathering. In the cultivation world, information is life -- being able to detect your opponent before they detect you is already half the battle won.

Concealment Spells

The counterpart to detection spells. These include invisibility arts, aura-masking techniques, and illusion-based disguises. Han Li frequently used concealment spells to avoid powerful enemies in his early years -- this was the technical underpinning of his famously cautious "Old Devil Han" style.

Restrictions and Seals

Spells used to lock down space and limit an opponent's movement. In battles between high-level cultivators, restriction spells often have more tactical value than direct attacks -- if you can limit your opponent's mobility, even the strongest enemy becomes a sitting target.

Summoning and Control

This includes controlling spirit insects, summoning spirit beasts, and manipulating puppets. One of Han Li's core combat forces -- the Gold Devouring Beetle swarm -- required specialized control spells to command. Coordinating tens of thousands of Gold Devouring Beetles simultaneously placed extremely demanding requirements on control spells.

The Shifting Value of Spells Across Stages

An interesting phenomenon: the value of spells is not fixed; it changes dramatically as cultivation realm advances.

During the Qi Refining stage, basic offensive spells are the primary means of dealing damage; by Foundation Establishment, magical treasures begin replacing spells as the main source of offense; after Core Formation, spells serve more as supplements to treasures and as components of tactical combinations; but at the Nascent Soul and Deity Transformation level, a select few extraordinarily powerful spells once again become decisive forces.

This value curve follows a "U" shape -- spells are important at both low and high levels, while treasures matter more at mid levels. This also explains why many mid-level cultivators neglect spell practice, only to discover at higher stages that their deficiencies in spell mastery are critically dangerous.

Han Li's Spell Arsenal

Han Li's spell repertoire can be called an "encyclopedia" of the cultivation world. He was not like a pure sword cultivator who specialized only in flying sword techniques, nor like a talisman cultivator overly dependent on talismans. His spell system covered all domains of offense, defense, and support, forming a comprehensive combat capability with no obvious weaknesses.

This "well-rounded without weak spots" style perfectly matched his cautious, suspicious personality -- he was always preparing for the worst-case scenario, and the worst-case scenario might require any type of spell to address.

Conclusion

The spell system is the soul of the cultivation world's combat framework. Through his rich and diverse spell designs, Wang Yu ensured that every battle was filled with strategic depth and uncertainty. Victory between cultivators depends not only on cultivation level, but on the combination and application of spells and real-time adaptation. The true master is the one who uses the right spell at the right moment.
